B2B Buyers Choose Favorites Before Sales Calls. Breaker Says Newsletters Win the Long Tail

With average B2B buying cycles lasting about 10 months and 95% winning vendors appearing on buyers' day-one shortlists, Breaker says recurring newsletter touchpoints help companies educate prospects before the sales conversation begins.
AUSTIN, Texas, Sept. 1, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- Familiarity with a business-to-business (B2B) brand often begins forming long before a buyer is ready to contact sales. The LinkedIn B2B Institute's 95-5 Rule estimates that up to 95% of potential B2B buyers are out of market at any given time, meaning companies selling complex or high-value services may need to build that preference over months before a buying need emerges. For companies with long sales cycles, that creates a marketing challenge: staying useful and visible while prospects are not actively shopping.
"Newsletters are the best nurture tool because they let a company maintain the relationship and continue providing value," said Ben Billups, founder and CEO of Breaker, a newsletter platform focused on B2B audience growth and targeting. "When the project, budget, and timing finally line up, the company that made themselves useful is already top of mind."
The Decision Is Forming Before Sales Enters
A 2025 global study by 6sense of nearly 4,000 B2B buyers found that the average purchase journey lasted 10.1 months and that 95% of winning vendors were already on the buyer's day-one shortlist.
By the time the sales team enters the conversation, buyers may have already researched the market, defined their requirements, and developed strong preferences. A newsletter gives companies a recurring way to educate those buyers while they are still gathering information and are not yet ready to begin a formal purchase process.
That is what Billups calls the long tail of B2B marketing. A prospect may first encounter a company through its website, a webinar, or a LinkedIn post. The newsletter then gives the brand a predictable way to maintain the relationship across a buying cycle that can stretch for months. "A company cannot make a prospect revisit its homepage," Billups said. "But it can control how consistently useful information reaches a subscriber who has chosen to stay connected."
A Homepage Explains. A Newsletter Educates
Content Marketing Institute found that 71% of B2B marketers use them to distribute content, while 62% said content marketing helped nurture subscribers, audiences or leads.
Billups argues that their value should not be limited to distributing company announcements. A newsletter can help a business interpret market developments, share customer examples, explain how it approaches industry problems, and demonstrate expertise over time. "A homepage has to get to the point: what the company does and who it serves," Billups said. "A newsletter is different. It gives you room for case studies, execution details and real lead education."
The Business Must Be Ready to Play the Long Game
Billups does not argue that every company should launch a newsletter on its first day. A newsletter becomes more useful once the company has a defined audience, enough expertise to publish consistently, and the ability to support marketing that may take months to influence a purchase.
"Short-term marketing and sales strategies get you off the ground," Billups said. "But they are not the best long-term." As a company matures, the newsletter can serve more than lead nurture. It can become part of the company's brand marketing, reinforce its position in the market, and give prospective customers a continuing reason to pay attention between active buying periods.
The Long Tail Rewards Consistency
The payoff is rarely immediate. Billups said companies often test a newsletter for three months and abandon it before the audience relationship has time to develop. By contrast, he has seen businesses continue publishing for six to 12 months before the channel begins generating meaningful deal flow.
The delayed result can make attribution difficult, but that is also the point: the value comes from familiarity accumulated across the series, not from one email producing a sale. Consistency alone, however, is not enough. Content must reflect a distinct point of view and remain useful to the specific professional audience the company wants to reach.
Billups describes that role as narrative infrastructure: a recurring channel that connects market education, customer proof and brand perspective. The newsletter does not need to convert every reader immediately. It needs to remain valuable enough that the company stays familiar until a buying need comes up.
"The holy grail is differentiation," Billups said. "When someone sees the email, they should already know it will be interesting and useful. That is how a newsletter becomes a flywheel instead of just another fight for attention."
