CHICAGO, IL - Summer is winding down. In a lot of Chicago homes, that means the area rugs are about to come back out.

Rolled up in a closet since May. Pushed under a bed. Stashed in a basement corner. Wherever they went, they are heading back to the living room floor soon, and most of them have not been washed in a long time.
Vytas Macius has run Carpet Cleaning Group on Milwaukee Avenue since 2014. He says the reason is usually logistics, not neglect.
"Nobody wants to wrestle an eight by ten wool rug down three flights of stairs," Macius said. "A lot of our customers do not have a vehicle that fits one. So the rug sits there another year."
That is why his crew picks rugs up and brings them back at no charge across the city. Free pickup and delivery is included with area rug cleaning in Chicago, and it is the part customers ask about most.
Rugs are not cleaned the way wall to wall carpet is. They go back to the shop. There they can be dusted on both sides, washed with a method matched to the fiber, rinsed, and dried under control. A living room floor does not allow for any of that.
The difference matters most on the pieces people care about. Wool. Silk. Hand knotted antiques with natural dyes that can bleed if handled the wrong way. Fringe is usually the dirtiest part of a rug and the most fragile.
"Somebody hands me a rug their grandmother brought over, and that is not a cleaning job, that is a trust thing," Macius said. "We tell people up front what we can fix and what we cannot."
Rugs also collect more than they show. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency recommends vacuuming carpets and furniture every week, or more often, to cut down on indoor dust and allergens. That helps between washings. It does not replace one.
Macius suggests handling it before the rug goes down for the season.
"Clean it while it is still rolled up and out of the way," he said. "Once it is under the coffee table, nobody touches it until next summer."
Carpet Cleaning Group inspects each rug first and reviews options with the owner before any work begins. Damage such as holes, tears, or worn edges gets flagged during that inspection.
