A front-wheel-drive fiberglass sports car with a Ford V4 engine—Saab's eccentric take on performance joins the Ron Sturgeon Collection
FORT WORTH, TX, January 02, 2026 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Among the eclectic lineup at the DFW Car & Toy Museum, one Swedish sports car stands apart for its bold design and aviation-inspired engineering. The 1969 Saab Sonett II V4, now on display as part of the Ron Sturgeon Collection, is a rare and charismatic example of what happens when a fighter jet manufacturer tries its hand at making a race car for the road.
Built during a time when Saab was still defining its automotive identity, the Sonett II is powered by a 1.5-liter Ford Taunus V4 engine mated to a four-speed manual transaxle. Originally rated at 65 horsepower, the V4 provides spirited front-wheel-drive performance, all wrapped in a lightweight fiberglass body featuring a distinctive forward-tilting clamshell hood.
Other standout features include a column-mounted shifter, front disc brakes, 15" steel wheels, front and rear bumperettes, and a polycarbonate rear window. A roll bar adds structural rigidity and a touch of track-readiness, while the minimalist interior includes three-point seat belts, a heater, stereo system with speakers, an analog clock, and a dash-mounted VDO gauge cluster with a 120-mph speedometer and 7,000-rpm tachometer.
"This is a true enthusiast's car—lightweight, a little loud, and completely unconventional," said Ron Sturgeon, founder of the DFW Car & Toy Museum. "It's the kind of vehicle that reminds you just how much fun you can have with less than 100 horsepower."
Equally suited for twisty back roads or quirky car shows, the Saab Sonett II V4 is a reminder of when automotive design embraced individuality. It's one of hundreds of unique cars that have been featured at the DFW Car & Toy Museum since its grand opening, with new additions showcased regularly throughout the year.
